How Interserve Partners are expressing the value of wholism through ministry among refugees
Across the continents, Partners are ministering to people who have been traumatised by displacement and many losses and injustices, and who are struggling to rebuild a stable lifestyle, family and psyche. Work includes:
Resettlement assistance
Language and culture learning
Job training
Earning opportunities
Health care and health education
Therapeutic projects in sports, art, women’s groups
Children’s education
All of this is underpinned by developing ongoing relationships that provide friendship and a new community, motivated/spurred on by the love that Jesus has shown us in receiving us first. An Interserve Australia Partner recently shared this story, which challenges us all:
‘Abdul* fled his home in Central Asia and had been living as a refugee in Southeast Asia. He came to dinner with us a few weeks before flying to our country of origin where he would re-settle. He had many questions about living and working in our nation, and our conversation brought many things to mind.
I wonder, could you be the person to help a new resident learn to drive, swim or improve their English? Could you invite someone over for a meal, bake them a birthday cake or share celebrations? Be a guarantor for their rental agreement or help them find shared accommodation? Teach them how to use the local library, find the best bargains and discounts, and cheap places to get a haircut? Many, like Abdul, left their family behind. They need someone to be a mother, a father, a sibling and, above all, a friend.’
