There are short and long term opportunities with Interserve

THE WORLD IS ON YOUR DOORSTEP

CHRISTIAN MISSION IS FROM EVERYWHERE TO EVERYWHERE SO GETTING INVOLVED IN CROSS-CULTURAL WITNESS IS NO LONGER RESTRICTED TO GOING OVERSEAS. THERE ARE MANY OPPORTUNITIES AMONG IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES IN GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND

Although culturally ‘Christian’, Britain & Ireland have become more complex places to live. The population is both multi-religious and more secular at the same time.

Leicester, for example, now has the title ‘Britain’s first pluralist city’; over 41% are Sikh, Hindu or Muslim with no one group dominating.

Meanwhile, the religious attitudes of Anglo-Saxons are changing. In 1983, 31% of white Britons said they had no religion and in 1998 the figure was 45%. (Survey of British Social Attitudes)

For some people, these facts provoke fear about the loss of the Britain we once knew; for others the fear is about immigration or the apparent rise of radicalised minorities who may be imposing greater ‘foreign’ influence on the British way of life; still others are concerned about Anglo-Saxon right-wing groups who seem intent on fomenting racial tension.

Interserve views this scenario as a mission opportunity due to ethnic minorities arriving from places that have been closed to the gospel. We believe God is doing something new and so we developed a team of cross-culturally trained workers right here.

Personal Profile

ARE WE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Our vision is to make Jesus known in the least reached parts of the world and we are looking for people to join us in this challenge. We are not searching for superheroes but ordinary Christians following an extraordinary God. These are the qualities that unite us and are what we look for in others:

Different ways to work

WE HAVE A RANGE OF OPTIONS, EACH TAILORED TO YOUR SITUATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLSET, TO SUPPORT YOU AS YOU SERVE CROSS-CULTURALLY IN THE UK & IRELAND

VOLUNTEER

Volunteering can be a really simple convenient way to get involved without having to leaving your job or moving home. For some, volunteering is an incredible way to prepare for overseas mission and for others it is an end in itself.

ON TRACK

Are you thinking about a gap-year or sabbatical or you are early-retired? Short-term experience may well be the best way to proceed. This is an opportunity to make the most of your skills and spiritual gifts. Short-term placements are from 3 to 24 months.

Full Time

If you believe God is calling you to work cross-culturally in the UK or Ireland full-time, we can also help you to join a group of like-minded people located across the country who are working in co-operation with one another to bring Jesus into the local communities of people from other faiths.

ASSOCIATE

If you are already working cross-culturally in the UK or Ireland you don't have to do it alone. You could become an ‘Associate of Interserve’. This gives you the benefit of moral support, training, prayer, information, advice and networking. Be helped to sustain and resource your ministry where you are.

What We Offer

SERVING CROSS CULTURALLY CAN BE LIKE A ROLLER COASTER: A BALANCE OF EXCITEMENT AND APPREHENSION. WE HAVE 160 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AT DOING THIS SO YOU ARE IN EXPERIENCED HANDS. HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN EXPECT FROM US:

Orientation, training and preparation

We want you to be fully equipped before you leave. This may include orientations, training on fund raising and help while you build up all the necessary support before you go.

Ongoing support and training

The support doesn’t end at the station. Nor does the learning. We will continue to train you, invest in you and support you at every step of your journey.

Staff Care

What if the worst happens? If you or a family member are hurt or sick then we will get you the help that you need wherever that may be. We also monitor potential volatile political / social situations so we can assess the risks of choosing to remain in situ.

Team membership

Being part of a team means that you join a bigger story. A story where we celebrate each other’s triumphs and mourn together each other’s losses.

Mission Mentors

We have experienced missionaries who have returned to the UK and can share their experiences with you. This gives you the opportunity to have someone to chat things through and who will guide you throughout your journey.

Debrief and re-integration

One of the most common difficulties for Long Term partners is the return home and reverse-culture shock. We will work with you and your church to help you to re-integrate and think through the practicalities of your transition.
